Chapter 13

My knees are pulled up to my chin, my feet pressing into the truck seat, and my arms are wrapped around my legs. My adrenaline has slowed, but an underlying tension runs through my body and a dark cloud hangs over my mind. A dull throb pulses at the base of my skull, a pain that had been steadily increasing over the last few days.

I’m beginning to lose hope. Instead, despair is replacing my drive. Everytime I close my eyes, images of hard faces, malicious sneers, and cold eyes fill my mind.

The guys can feel the shift in my mood without me saying anything. Jonas reaches out for my hand, offering to pull me closer to him, but I can’t move.

I just don’t want to move.

I’m beginning to doubt everything.

My skin crawls every time I think about the attempted abduction and note the reality of how close they had gotten to taking me. A third attempt on my life and a kick to my gut telling me that I have no idea what I am doing.

I’m not sure I would be able to get out of the truck when the time comes.

The guys are quiet, shooting me side glances every few minutes.

“You should sleep,” Sam suggests.

I don’t answer him. I shrug noncommittally and turn back to the window.

“Go ahead and take the batteries out of your phones,” Beck says as he drives. He pulls out his own phone and hands it to Sam.

“Don’t you need to call the guy that we’re going to see?” I ask, speaking for the first time in two hours.

“There’s no phone to call,” Jonas says, pulling the back of his phone cover off. “Cap doesn’t have any phones.”

“Or a TV, or a computer.” Sam adds.

“Just a laptop.” Beck looks at me through the rearview mirror. “That he only uses for digging around on the darknet.”

No phone…

No TV...

Darknet…

I’m not sure how much I want to go to this guy’s house.

“So we’re just going to show up?” I turn to look at Jonas. “Without any notice?”

Jonas smiles, “Sam sent an email, hopefully he sees it.”

I lift an eyebrow. “And why does he trust you?”

“Because Jonas and I saved his life,” Beck says from the front. “Unburied him from a pile of rubble before he suffocated to death.”

“But we couldn’t save his arm,” Jonas says in a low tone. There is regret in his voice.

I relax my arms and drop my legs to the ground. “What’s his real name?”

All three guys shake their heads. “No one knows,” Beck answers.

My other eyebrow lifts.

“It’ll be fine.” Sam offers me a warm smile.

My head shakes slowly. “I don’t know…”

“It will be much safer than any hotel,” Beck says.

“If someone tries to sneak onto his property to come after you,” Sam turns around again, “they would either be electrified, chewed up by his dogs, or shot before they get six feet.”

I understand the assurances they’re trying to give me. It does sound like a safe place, it just doesn’t sound like a place that would be open to a complete stranger coming to visit.
